For his highly anticipated first Haute Couture collection as Creative Director of Balenciaga, Pierpaolo Piccioli delivered exactly what fashion had been waiting for—not an imitation of Cristóbal Balenciaga, nor a continuation of Demna's era, but the beginning of an entirely new conversation.
Presented during Paris Haute Couture Week, the collection felt deeply emotional while remaining unmistakably Balenciaga. Piccioli leaned into the house's legendary architectural heritage, yet softened it with his unmistakable romanticism. Monumental silhouettes, sculptural volumes, delicate florals, sweeping trains and extraordinary handwork reminded us that couture is still fashion's highest art form.
Backstage, there was an electricity that only couture can create.
Artisans made last-second adjustments to gowns requiring thousands of hours of craftsmanship. Stylists carefully arranged dramatic feathered creations, jewel-encrusted arm cuffs were fastened moments before models stepped onto the runway, and impossibly voluminous silhouettes floated through the backstage maze like moving sculptures. Every corner revealed another masterpiece waiting for its moment.
One of the collection's greatest strengths was its range. Ethereal petal-covered gowns dissolved into rich ombré tones. Black sculptural eveningwear showcased dramatic exposed backs and impeccable tailoring. Immense feathered creations transformed the human silhouette into living sculpture, while oversized cocoon-like volumes referenced Cristóbal Balenciaga's architectural genius through a thoroughly modern lens.
Rather than relying on spectacle alone, Piccioli reminded us that emotion is couture's greatest luxury.
His use of colour, proportion and texture felt optimistic without sacrificing sophistication. Even the boldest looks possessed an unexpected softness—proof that power in fashion doesn't always need to shout.
Innovation also quietly ran through the collection. Alongside extraordinary traditional craftsmanship, the atelier experimented with new materials, including lab-grown silk alternatives and technically engineered internal structures that supported Balenciaga's gravity-defying silhouettes while preserving the purity of couture construction.
If this debut established anything, it is that Pierpaolo Piccioli understands the responsibility of inheriting one of fashion's most revered maisons. Rather than chasing trends, he returned the conversation to craftsmanship, beauty and emotion—the very foundations upon which haute couture was built.
